Question by kld726: Start a small biz in this economy? Where do I start?
My husband and I, like many Americans are sick of working for other companies with no job security and futures of false hope. We have quite a bit of food service experience but don’t want to sell our souls to the devil, per say, by opening a full time restaurant that we have to live and die by.

So my question is…
we really want to start a biz and work for ourselves, what biz is best?
and what biz will take limited funds to start?
We personally have maybe 5K-10K with maybe some extra help from family. But nothing in the millions.

Any ideas?
What would you buy in this economy?
Do you still go out to eat? Do you still go out to drink? Party? etc…
Do you purchase desserts, chocolates, gourmet cheeses, or specialty items?

Any help would be great!

We have been thinking of a food truck, or mobile catering operation, anyone every done this?

I think it is a great idea to start a business but you should choose something with very little overhead since the economy is as bad as it is and have at least one of you keep your regular jobs in case it doesn’t take off the way you are hoping. also you sound like you don’t want to put 100% into the business and if you want it to be successful that is what you have to do, you get out of it what you put in it. choose something you enjoy and you will be good at it and make the most of it. I think the food truck is a great idea if you want to serve lunch to workers that is something that is still going strong. good luck.

Question by pearlho31: Start catering business?
I have perfect kitchen. I can cook like a gourmet chef. Our condo is in good location for potiential customers. My questions: How to start? Do I need a permit or license (Arlington, Virginia)? How to establish a web site? How to hire a delivery driver?
Thank you

Answer by Ed Atun
Start by baking a basketful of muffins and cookies. Visit the local office buildings. The receptionist will announce “The bakery lady is here” and everyone will come to the lobby. You can make a good living doing this.

To do it on a bigger scale, visit local wedding dress shops and tell them what you are offering. Then visit all the wedding “sites” and tell them that you are available on short notice in case anyone cancels at the last minute ( it happens a lot).

You will deliver by yourself in the early days. Don’t buy or rent a truck. Don’t hire a driver; you have to be ready to deliver yourself. The first time a “hired” driver shows up 2 hours late, you will understand.

The city does not care about licenses or permits in the beginning. They are pretty understanding unless you are bothering your neighbors with hundreds of delivery people bringing ingredients to your condo. Later you can register with the city. Probably a $ 40 license fee. The County Health Department will send you a list of their guidelines which are simple.

Yahoo can help you set up a website for cheap.
