Question by pistons56: Do you think the Food Network needs an overhaul?
It’s not a bad network, but Paula Deen, Iron Chef and all its spinoffs, Emeril, the 2 Dudes Catering, that Ham guy Alton Brown, Giada De Laurentiis and Sandra Lee have got to go! The channel needs to return to its food roots and stop focusing on the snotty, gourmet scene. Cooking food is an art, and this channel has focused more on personalities than FOOD.
If anything, Paula Deen and Alton Brown are ANNOYING. I’d be happy if those 2 idiots left. Deen is a TOTAL fake and Brown is a SNOB. How did those 2 Dudes Catering guys get on? They are NASTY and totally unprofessional. UGH…I’m not eating anything they cater!

I agree with you for the most part. Food Network really has gone down the tubes. I enjoy the original Iron Chef, I enjoy Good Eats (and I’ve learned a lot of really practical things I apply to my own cooking there), “Dinner Impossible” is okay (I like his way of thinking) and I do like the “Challenges” but that’s about it. $ 40/day is okay at best simply because it’s good info to know when traveling (which I do a fair bit of).
There’s nothing really to watch for anymore, I used to love learning things but I don’t know what I’m supposed to learn from things like “Semi-Homemade” – how to open a Bisquick package?

Question by dudefromnewmexico666: What do you think of China telling restaraunts to take dog off the menu during the Olympics?
Restaurants and hotels in the Chinese capital have been asked to take dog meat off the menu during Olympics and Paralympics due to concerns that the canine dishes might be offensive to Westerners and animal rights activists.
“Gourmets with a special predilection for dog meat will be disappointed if they come to the Chinese capital in the coming two months,” a Beijing Tourism Bureau official said.
The Beijing Catering Trade Association (BETA) has issued a circular forbidding all the 112-designated restaurants from providing dog meat dishes during Olympics and strongly advised other establishments to suspend serving the canine delicacy until September.
“If a customer orders dog meat, the restaurant staff should patiently suggest another entree,” Xiong Yumei, the Bureaus Vice-Director, was quoted as saying by official Xinhua news agency. “Conflicts should be avoided.” Canine dishes are popular among the Korean community in Beijing, as also in Yunnan and Guizhou restaurants.
Apart from being a delicacy, dog meat is also believed by many Chinese to be an effective element to lower blood pressure. Some also think it boosts “sexual prowess”.
Animal rights and environmental activists claim dogs are brutally killed with clubs and knives in China’s dog meat industry.

Your English seems to be fine, so unless you have a severe speech impediment or hearing disorder, you need to take out “any office work without having to use a phone.”
That just sounds bizarre.
You just turn down any offer of a receptionist job with no particular explanation except, “I don’t think I’m interested.”

I live in Houston TX and want to start a small catering business from my home. I want to sell cakes, cookies, brownies, and pies……is there a market for this?
My recipes are pretty good and I love baking. I wont be selling plain old cookies, I will be selling gourmet cookies from my recipe and fresh pies…like sweet potato pie (not from the can!) and other stuff….what do you guys think?

Found gourmet catering in do-it-myself catering…what do you think?

Question by jmd72inva: do-it-myself catering…what do you think?
We have this great service in our area (its actually a chain that’s catching on…www.supperthyme.com) Here you prepare the foods (mid-gourmet type) and cart them off in freezer-friendly trays. Each tray = 6 servings
My fiance and I are paying for our wedding ourselves, so are watching our pennies…I really think this will be a good idea- BUT am I biting off too much?? It will mean enlisting the oven’s of everyone we know on our big day and renting the serving dishes.
I have a tendency to get all excited about something before I have every detail…we will be able to have 12 different dishes (getting 3 trays of each dish)- all for 645.00. This will allow our guests to have 2-3 trips to the buffet if they want (we have 125 guests)
obviously we are still looking at appetizers, drinks, etc…but how does this sound to you?? do you think this is do-able?
thanks!
Thank you all so much! as I was afraid, I was getting ahead of myself with this idea- for budget-sake, I will reserve this as my “Plan B” (as this is at my home, I’ve hired a wedding coordinator for the day before and day of our wedding to oversee decorating and food set up- I COMPLETELY AGREE with keeping our day as stress-free as possible)
Its hard to pick a best answer- thanks again.

All I can say is, the day before my wedding and my actual wedding day, if I’d have had to worry about heating food, setting up serving dishes, or setting the tables, I would’ve had a nervous breakdown. It may be possible for you to do, but keep in mind how busy you’ll be. Cooking for 125 is a LOT of work! Unless you’re SUPER organized and have a LOT of help, it might be better to leave it to the professionals.
